The definitive icing on this quite frankly insulting cake is that they just did the whole 'remaster / rerun' after the 1000th episode. So really, there was no rush, and yet the whole thing really feels like there truly was one. Not even in the slightest: in fact, some of their best ratings from last year were from this period.
How lazy is that? And if they were impacted by the Covid19 crisis (which of course would be perfectly understandable), why not postpone the remake to a later date? Last year, Detective Conan had four months of full reruns, and it did not impact the TV ratings. Why could not this be a one-hour special again? Or at least a 'three-part arc'? They could not even be bothered to provide new footages for the congratulatory opening. The pacing was also all over the place, and some passages were left out for no apparent reason (such as the beginning of the case on the boat - you know the sequence that brought context to the whole narrative). It lacked the great atmosphere of the original case. In my opinion it should have, but considering how popular the show remains to this day, I might be in the minority on that front.Īnyway, this digression aside, was this celebration any good? I am afraid it clearly was not: not only did the idea of remaking a previous case (one of the better ones no less) felt a bit easy, the remake in question was extremely rushed, and bland overall. It is just that I do not feel like celebrating the fact that one of my favourite cartoons ever far outstayed its welcome.ĭetective Conan is still a decent anime of course (though one may argue that the latest fillers tend to prove otherwise), but there is a discussion to be had about whether or not Detective Conan should have ended like 5 to 10 years ago. I do not want to sound like a party pooper - especially since writing and directing more than 1000 episodes and God knows how many cases are by all means worthy of any kind of celebration. I suppose I should congratulate the staff working on Detective Conan for reaching such a significant, but also very impressive milestone - but, not going to lie, I am not super stoked by that.
